LLI-447 “Explore Balts”
As part of “Explore Balts” project activities, Kurzeme Planning Region has started to organise master classes on ancient crafts.
1) The first out of the three planned Master Class sessions took part on 1 July 2022 in Lucavsala (Riga) and was organised in cooperation with the Archeological Club of Latvia. During the first session the participants learned about:
- Flint processing in the Stone Age: raw materials, techniques, practical use;
- Types of natural fibers and their diverse use in the past;
- Bronze working in prehistory from the perspective of experimental archeology;
- And took part in preparing ancient Couronian dished – fire soup, buns and herbal teas!
2) The second out of the three planned Master Class sessions took part on 3 September 2022 at the Couronian Vikings’ Settlement in Grobiņa and was organised in cooperation with theTourism Club Oga. During the second session the participants learned about:
- how to prepare the traditional suiti dish called sklandrauši lead by Laila Puķīte from Alsunga;
- making of clay protection shields lead by Līga Slišāne;
- using of ancient archery skills lead by Kuršu bultas team;
- sailing with a vikings’ boat.

3) The third and the last of the three planned Master Class sessions took place on 28 October 2022 in Liepāja and was devoted to amber processing and ancient meals. Participants learned how to grind and polish the amber and each made its own pendant or necklace, as well as attended the Ancient meals’ class at Hoijeres krogs!
