Project No. C034
On 10th of September 2024, the second “Light in the Darkness” online seminar “Challenges and Opportunities during the Tourism Low Season in the Baltic Sea Region” was held, the recording of which can now be watched on YouTube.com! During the seminar we learned about the main target markets and key sales factors in the Baltic Sea Region and the most common challenges and opportunities for tourism entrepreneurs.
The webinar was held in English.

Two major studies carried out within the project were presented during the workshop:
- Project Manager Monika Birkle from Åland University of Applied Sciences presented a survey and study of nature tourism operators. The survey was conducted in five project countries with almost 300 survey respondents and more than 20 interviews with small and medium tourism entrepreneurs who revealed to us their biggest challenges and problems.
- Professor Diana Šaparnienė from Klaipėda University introduced us to the study “Understanding nature tourists’ preferences, expectations, motivations and seasonal preferences”. A large international survey in nine European countries gathered nearly 5000 responses. Through a detailed analysis of tourist profiles, the study identified different typologies of nature tourists, each with unique characteristics and habits.
- Matti Kose, owner of Wild Estonian Nature and co-founder of the Estonian Nature Tourism Association, attended the seminar to share his experience – “Seasonality – how to innovate new services for year-round business”.
