From 24 to 28 November, representatives from the Kurzeme Planning Region and municipalities, including development planning specialists and education experts, participated in an exchange visit to Iceland. The aim was to gain new perspectives on fostering community engagement and exploring adult education opportunities.

During the visit, the delegation:

  • Explored U3A Reykjavik, an organisation providing lifelong learning opportunities for seniors, encouraging active lifestyles and curiosity. More information: https://u3a.is
  • Visited Reykjavik Municipality, where they gained insights into the importance of public participation and innovation in urban development. More information: https://reykjavik.is

The experience gained in Iceland highlighted the importance of public participation and education in promoting sustainable development. The delegation gained valuable insights into how educational programmes can improve the quality of life for various societal groups and encourage active engagement in community life. Additionally, they deepened their understanding of how municipalities can enhance service accessibility and citizen involvement in local decision-making through innovative solutions and collaboration with communities.

The exchange visit was organised within the framework of the Bilateral Cooperation Fund under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014–2021 programme “Local Development, Poverty Reduction, and Cultural Cooperation.” This initiative, “Experience Exchange between the Kurzeme Planning Region and Iceland on Municipal Collaboration with Citizens and Adult Education,” was implemented by the Kurzeme Planning Region.
