The Travelling museum is an idea, which has been born in the #AccessRoutes project and further developed with the Vunki mano hackathon in Estonia, in which the Kurzeme museum team won one of the main prizes for its solution to facilitate accessibility through intrepretation of museum content, i.a. for visitors with visual and mental disorders.

In collaboration with 6 museums from Kurzeme, NGO Apeirons, the Estonian Chamber of People with Disabilities, the Kurzeme Planning Region and three traveling museum producers – Amberfarm Ltd., Aģentūra Raugs Ltd. and PinkOrange Ltd., we have produced 9 Travelling museum chests, each of which is different in content and tells its own story about the history of Kurzeme and South Estonia.

Each compartment of the chest contains a miniature object that can be taken and thoroughly examined. With the help of these objects, visitors will be able to learn about the museum and touch reproductions of historical objects, which are often not allowed to be touched due to their historical value. Simple text, tasks, objects, tactile cards and QR codes provide the opportunity to use different senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell), allowing any museum visitor to freely use the Travelling museum chest!

We have also come up with 3 sound animations for the Travelling museum: old town, narrow-gauge railway and swallow song which allows to dive into the magical visualizations of sound interpretation – imagining what a sound might look like if it were drawn?

Old town sound animation

Narrow-gauge railway sound animation

Swallow song – sound animation

The chest contains 9 tactile cards, each telling the story of its own museum, allowing visitors to explore the museums to which our 9 Travelling chests have travelled. We invite you all to visit our 9 museums and explore museums also through the Travelling museum chests!
