In September of this year, the “SuRuMo” project, known as “Sustainable Rural Mobility Solutions,” held in-person meetings with residents in four pilot locations. The aim was to gather residents’ perspectives on mobility needs and opportunities, as well as to understand the local situation and travel habits.

The meetings took place as follows:

  • September 12th in Ziemupe, South Kurzeme Municipality – attended by 18 participants
  • September 18th in Alsunga, Kuldīga Municipality – attended by 13 participants
  • September 20th in Ķūļciems, Talsi Municipality – including residents from Pļavas, with a total of 28 participants
  • September 25th at 1 PM in Vāne, Tukums Municipality – attended by 22 participants

The “SuRuMo” project events began with a presentation, during which residents were introduced to the project’s goals and planned outcomes. This was followed by a discussion of the survey results for each pilot location. The meetings continued with group work to analyze mobility habits and needs. Depending on the number of participants, residents were divided into groups led by members of the project team. After listening to and compiling opinions, each group presented their findings.

In the second part of the event, project expert Gints Birzietis introduced participants to various mobility solutions and future possibilities, while the Head of the Public Transport Department, Indulis Ozoliņš from the Kurzeme Planning Region, provided an overview of the current public transport situation in each pilot location and discussed potential improvements in line with participants’ preferences.

Subsequently, group work was conducted to discuss possible solutions and participants’ desires concerning public transport improvements. At the end of the event, each group leader from the project team presented the collected ideas.

The project team, primarily from the Kurzeme Planning Region, included Project Manager Vizma Ģēģere, Mobility Specialist Anna Margreta Vērdiņa, Head of the Public Transport Department Indulis Ozoliņš, Spatial Development Planner Inguna Tomsone, and GIS Specialist and Cartographer Jānis Puga, along with Mobility Expert Gints Birzietis as a consultant to the project.

The collected feedback and suggestions from participants will be analyzed to identify the pilot locations where mobility pilot solutions will be implemented as part of the project. The “SuRuMo” project aims to enhance communication among local residents through the use of proposed mobility solutions.

The “SuRuMo” project (“Sustainable Rural Mobility”) is being implemented to conduct research in pilot territories, compile the obtained data, and develop a unified digital platform to find solutions for sustainable mobility in rural areas.

Project activities are being implemented with the support of the Central Baltics Programme 2021-2027.
