On 2 July 2025, improvement works were completed at Liepāja’s Beberliņi Blue Flag swimming area as part of the Latvia–Lithuania cross-border project “Water Route Network Development in Latvia and Lithuania, Expanding the Cross-Border Tourism Product riverways.eu (WaterWays)”. The project aims to promote water tourism in Latvia and Lithuania by creating a cross-border network of rivers and lakes for recreational activities and compiling joint information to encourage responsible tourism and reduce the impact on natural resources.

The swimming area now features two new changing cabins, benches, and waste bins, four bicycle racks, solar-powered lighting, informational stands and signs. Road signs have also been installed to limit vehicle access to the surrounding area, helping to preserve local natural values.

Construction works for the project – “Beberliņi Area Improvement in Liepāja, Phase 5” – were carried out by SIA CTB with a total cost of €71,025.41, while construction supervision was provided by SIA Euro Lux. The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (€38,281.78) and the Liepāja municipality (€35,042.63).

The Beberliņi swimming area holds the Blue Flag eco-certification, confirming its compliance with 33 strict criteria related to water and environmental quality, safety, available services, environmental education, and accessible information. During the official swimming season – 15 May to 15 September – regular water quality monitoring is carried out, and the results are available on the municipal website.

The project WaterWays, or “Development of the Water Route Network in Latvia and Lithuania by Expanding the Cross-Border Tourism Product www.riverways.eu” (LL-00011), is being implemented with the support of the Interreg Latvia – Lithuania Programme. The Project is led by the Kurzeme Planning Region, with partners including Saldus, Talsi and Kuldīga municipalities, Liepāja city, Klaipėda and Kretinga district municipalities, and the Lithuanian Countryside Tourism Association.
