The aim of the event was to analyze regional mobility problems and jointly seek sustainable solutions, particularly in less populated areas. The discussion brought together municipal representatives, spatial planners, NGOs, and experts in transport and development policy.
The discussion was structured in two parts:
- Informative part: The main mobility challenges in Latvian municipalities were highlighted – low public transport frequency, limited accessibility, insufficient infrastructure, and lack of digitalized information.
- Discussion part: Anna Margreta Vērdiņa presented both quantitative and qualitative findings from the “SuRuMo” project, emphasizing the need for structured citizen involvement and cooperation across different levels of planning.
Key conclusions from the discussion:
- Priority should be given to using existing digital solutions rather than developing new platforms;
- On-demand transport solutions must be easily accessible to residents without creating excessive regulatory burdens;
- Alongside statistical data, it is important to recognize residents’ experiences, needs, and obstacles;
- Developing sustainable solutions requires close cooperation between national, municipal, and regional planners, as well as with local residents.
Participation in the discussion was an important opportunity to strengthen cooperation with other regions and national institutions. The experience and contacts gained will be used to improve the mobility network in Kurzeme, particularly in developing approaches for citizen engagement and data collection.
