S002 “BSR Food Coalition”
As part of #bsrfoodcoalition project, more than 30 representatives from municipalities in Kurzeme and Klaipeda regions came together for 2 days (8-9 April 2024) in Aizpute, to share experience on the implemnetation progress of their regional school meals’ pilots aimed at facilitating locally grown products in school meals.
Locally grown produce in school meals is a complicated topic, because of many stakeholders, involved parties, regulations and procedures and a quick and easy solution can’t be made. Nevertheless, despite many challenges, there are efforts already being taken under the #bsrfoodcoalition and #greenschooldining projects (masterclasses for school chefs and experience exchange visits in schools, development of local food strategy for the municipality to facilitate organic food in school meals), as well as efforts still to be made – a much closer cooperation needs to be stimulated between the school, municipality, catering company and the farmer, to jointly work on getting the local farmer products to the local school, so that local kids can eat healthy meals from local products.
Moreover, thinking of the new Lat-Lit programme call for projects and brainstorming on the potential project ideas, municipalities came to the conclusion that school meals is one of the potential cooperation project ideas to be worked on, in order to maximise the cooperaton among the two border regions on this topic that has already succesfully started and continue developing it with joint efforts.
Project activities are being implemented with the support of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2021-2027.
