Kurzeme Planning Region has been granted the 2024 Annul Award for Supporting People with Disabilities in the category “Accessibility initiatives”. The award is being jointly granted by the Ombusman, the NGO Apeirons and the National Linrary of Latvia. This high recognition acknowledges the continuos work of our region dedicated to improving accessibility for all and promoting social inclusion.
Among the accessibility initiatives carried out, few activities were highlighted particularly as part of the Access Routes project:
- The new accessible beach built at the Lake Būšnieki in Venstpils with access paths, lake boardwalk, resting areas with tables and benches, outdoor gym stands, changing cabins and a floating wheelchair. These solutions allow everyone, incuding people with movement disorders, to enjoy swimming and nature without obstacles.
- More than 50 on-spot accessibility inspections at museums, cafes, guest houses and other touristic objects, by providing practical recommendations for accessiblity improvements to municipalities, entrepreneurs and other sector representatives.
- 7 routes accessible for all – visitors with movement, sight and hearing disorders. There routes allow everyone to safely and fully enjoy the nature and cultural attractions in Kurzeme. Information on accessible routes, nature trails and other sites and objects is available on www.mapeirons.eu!
This success is a step towards even broader changes. Kurzeme Planning Region and “Access Routes” project continue to develop accessibility initiatives and is cooperaying with municipalities, NGOs and tourism sector professionals, to create envitornment that is friendly, inclusive and accessible to everyone.
