Welcome to the Geosites page!

The aim of the Geosites project is to promote the protection and conservation of geological heritage in Latvia and Lithuania by improving knowledge of underwater and terrestrial geological sites. The project explores underwater geological formations in the Baltic Sea and Lake Plateliai, while also compiling information on terrestrial geological sites in Kurzeme and Žemaitija. The data collected and materials developed help to improve understanding of the geological structure and ecological significance of these areas, as well as the conservation measures they require.

This page brings together the content created within the project, including videos, educational and informative materials, 3D models, and a map of geological sites. These resources provide an opportunity to explore the project’s research results and learn more about geological heritage, its role in biodiversity, and its sustainable conservation.

The content of this page has been prepared within the project “Enhancing Protection of Geological Structures in Latvia and Lithuania” (project acronym: “Geosites”, project No. LL-00244), co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027. Its content is the sole responsibility of Kurzeme Planning Region and cannot, under any circumstances, be regarded as reflecting the official position of the European Union.
